Prefixes and suffixes

1Root words

The root word is the main part of a word. We can add letters to the start or to the end of a root word to make a new word.

Example

view, review, viewer

2Prefixes

A prefix is added to the start of a word. It changes the meaning. The spelling of the root word stays the same.

Example

un + tidy = untidy

3Common prefixes

  • un: not (untidy)
  • dis: not, the opposite of (disobey)
  • re: again (refill)
  • pre: before (preschool)
  • mis: wrongly (misspell)

4Suffixes

A suffix is added to the end of a word. It changes the meaning or the kind of word.

Example

cheer + ful = cheerful

5Common suffixes

  • ful: full of (cheerful)
  • less: without (sleepless)
  • er: someone who does something (singer)
  • ly: in a way (quickly)
  • ness: the state of being (sadness)

6Spelling changes

  • A prefix does not change the root word.
  • Consonant and y: change y to i before a suffix (happy + ness = happiness, beauty + ful = beautiful)
