Pronouns

1What is a pronoun?

A pronoun takes the place of a noun. We use pronouns so that we do not repeat the same noun again and again.

Example

Zodwa lost the key. She found it under the bed.

2Subject pronouns

  • I, you, he, she, it, we, they
  • They come before the verb and show who does the action.
  • Say Lebo and I, not Lebo and me, when you do the action.
Example

We play soccer on Fridays.
Lebo and I went to the shop.

3Object pronouns

These come after the verb, or after words such as to, for and with: me, you, him, her, it, us, them.

Example

Dad called us.
The gift is for them.

4Which pronoun?

  • he: a boy or a man
  • she: a girl or a woman
  • it: one animal or thing
  • they: more than one person, animal or thing
  • we: me and other people
Example

My brothers are tall. They eat a lot.

5Possessive words

These show who owns something. My, your, his, her, its, our and their come before a noun. Mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs stand alone.

Example

This is our house. The house is ours.

6Make it clear

The reader must know who the pronoun means. Use the name again if it is not clear.

Example

Unclear: Tumi told Kate that she was late.
Clear: Tumi told Kate that Kate was late.
