Writing a friendly letter

1What is a friendly letter?

A friendly letter is written to someone you know well, such as a friend or a relative. It sounds chatty and warm, like talking.

  • to say thank you
  • to invite someone
  • to share your news

2The parts of a letter

  • address and date at the top
  • greeting
  • message in paragraphs
  • closing and your name
Example

12 Protea Road, Mbombela
3 May 2026
Dear Thandi,
(your message)
Your friend,
Palesa

3Address and date

Write your address at the top, then the date. This tells the reader where the letter is from and when it was written.

Example

8 Marula Lane, Polokwane
5 July 2026

4The greeting

Start with Dear and the name of the person. Dear starts with a capital letter. Put a comma after the name.

Example

Dear Thandi,
Dear Auntie Lindiwe,

5The message

  • First paragraph: say hello, ask how the reader is and explain why you are writing.
  • Middle: tell your news. Start a new paragraph for each new idea.
  • Last: ask a question or say you hope to hear soon.

6The closing

End with a closing, such as Your friend, With love, or Best wishes. Put a comma after it. Write your name on the next line.

Example

With love,
Palesa
