Adverbs

1What is an adverb?

An adverb tells us more about a verb. It answers the questions how, when, where and how often.

Example

The girls danced gracefully.

2Adverbs of manner (how)

Many end in ly. Add ly to an adjective. Consonant and y: change y to ily. Ends in le: change le to ly.

Example

quick, quickly; loud, loudly
happy, happily; gentle, gently
good, well

3Adverbs of time (when)

They tell us when something happens: now, today, yesterday, tomorrow, soon, later.

Example

We will leave soon.

4Adverbs of place (where)

They tell us where something happens: here, there, everywhere, outside, upstairs, downstairs.

Example

We looked everywhere.

5Adverbs of frequency (how often)

They tell us how often: always, often, sometimes, seldom, never. They usually go before the verb.

Example

She always has a book in her bag.

6Adverbs of degree (how much)

They tell us how much: very, quite, too, really.

Example

The soup was very hot.
