1What is a conjunction?

A conjunction is a joining word. It joins words, groups of words or whole sentences.

Example

2Jobs of conjunctions

  • and adds information
  • but shows a contrast
  • or gives a choice
  • so shows a result
  • because gives a reason
Example

3Time conjunctions

When, while, before, after and until tell us about time.

Example

We waited until the bus arrived.
We brush our teeth before we go to bed.

4If, unless and although

  • if gives a condition: if it rains
  • unless means if not: unless it rains
  • although shows a contrast: although it was cold
Example

We will play unless it rains.

5Commas

Use a comma before but and so when they join two full sentences. Use a comma after an opening part that starts with although, if or when.

Example

I was tired, but I finished.
Although it was cold, we swam.

6Joining sentences

Join two short sentences to make one longer sentence. Choose the conjunction that fits the meaning.
