Fact and opinion

1What is a fact?

A fact can be checked and proved true.

Example

Pretoria is in Gauteng.
A spider has eight legs.

2What is an opinion?

An opinion is what someone thinks or feels. Other people may disagree.

Example

Winter is the worst season.
Pizza is delicious.

3Words that signal an opinion

  • best, worst, better, most beautiful
  • boring, delicious, scary, fun
  • I think, I believe, should, must

4How to check a fact

  • Look in a book, an atlas or a dictionary.
  • Measure it, count it or test it.
  • Ask an expert.
Example

The hall is 12 metres long: measure it.

5Mixed sentences

Some sentences have a fact and an opinion. Find the part that can be checked. That part is the fact.

Example

Sipho is a brilliant runner, and he won the 100 metres.

6Writers who sound sure

Words like everyone knows and obviously do not turn an opinion into a fact. A good opinion gives a reason.

Example

Libraries are important because everyone can borrow books for free.
