Continuous and perfect tenses

1Simple tenses

The simple tenses tell us when an action happens: in the past, now or in the future.

Example

She walked. She walks. She will walk.

2Continuous tenses

The continuous tenses show an action that is, was or will be going on. Use a form of be and a verb ending in ing.

  • Present: am, is or are + ing
  • Past: was or were + ing
  • Future: will be + ing
Example

The birds are singing.
Tomorrow they will be singing.

3Past continuous

It shows an action that was in progress when something else happened.

Example

He was sleeping when the thunder began.

4Present perfect

Use has or have and the past participle. The action is finished, but it matters now.

Example

The bus has arrived.
The boys have gone.

5Past perfect

Use had and the past participle. The action was finished before another past action.

Example

She had packed her bag before the taxi came.

6Past participles
