Subject and verb agreement

1The basic rule

The verb must agree with its subject. A singular subject takes a singular verb. A plural subject takes a plural verb.

Example

The girl sings.
The girls sing.

2Be, have and do

  • is, are; was, were
  • has, have
  • does, do; doesn’t, don’t
Example

The dog does tricks.
The dogs do tricks.

3Subjects joined by and

Two subjects joined by and take a plural verb.

Example

Mum and Dad are at work.

4Words in between

Find the real subject. Ignore the words that come between the subject and the verb.

Example

The basket of apples is heavy.

5Everyone, each and nobody

These words take a singular verb: everyone, each, nobody, someone, one of. Both and many take a plural verb. A group acting as one takes a singular verb.

Example

Everybody likes music.
One of the dogs is missing.

6There is and there are

After There, the verb agrees with the noun that follows.

Example

There is a rock.
There are rocks.
