Direct and reported speech

1Direct speech

Direct speech gives the exact words that a person says. The words go inside quotation marks.

Example

Nomsa said, “I love the sea.”

2Punctuating direct speech

  • A comma comes before the opening quotation marks.
  • The first spoken word has a capital letter.
  • The last mark goes inside the closing quotation marks.
Example

The guide asked, “Can you hear me?”
“We can leave now,” said the guide.

3Reported speech

Reported speech tells what was said, but not in the exact words. It has no quotation marks. We often add that. Pronouns change: I becomes he or she, and we becomes they.

Example

Nomsa said that she loved the sea.

4Changing the verb

The verb usually moves one step into the past.

  • am, is: was; are: were
  • will: would; can: could
  • has, have: had; walk: walked
Example

She said, “I like tea.” becomes She said that she liked tea.

5Changing time and place

  • now becomes then; today becomes that day
  • tomorrow becomes the next day
  • yesterday becomes the day before
  • last week becomes the week before
  • this becomes that; here becomes there

6Questions and commands

  • Question: asked + if, whether or the question word. Use statement word order. No question mark.
  • Command: told or asked + to
Example

He asked, “Where is the library?” becomes He asked where the library was.
She said, “Sit down.” becomes She told us to sit down.
