Persuasive writing

1Purpose and audience

Persuasive writing tries to convince the reader to agree with you or to do something. Think about the audience: who will read it?

Example

a letter to the principal
a poster for the school fair

2Structure

  • Introduction: state your opinion.
  • Body: give reasons, each with evidence.
  • Conclusion: sum up and tell the reader what to do.

3Fact and opinion

A fact can be proved. An opinion shows what someone thinks or feels. Words such as best, should and boring signal an opinion.

Example

Durban is on the east coast. (fact)
Durban has the best beaches. (opinion)

4Persuasive techniques

  • Rhetorical question: asked for effect
  • Repetition: repeat key words
  • Emotive language: words that stir feelings
  • Strong adjectives and superlatives
Example

Who wants to live in a dirty town?

5Call to action

End by telling the reader what to do. Use a command.

Example

Recycle your bottles today!

6Tone and language

  • Speak to the reader with you and we.
  • Use strong, positive words.
  • Support every claim with a fact or example.
  • Be polite and respectful.
