Reading poetry

1Reading a poem

A poem is made of lines. A group of lines is a stanza. Read it aloud more than once to hear how it sounds.

Example

title, lines, stanzas

2Rhyme

Rhyme is the same sound at the end of words. We label the rhyme scheme with letters.

Example

sun, fun (A A)
night, light (B B)
sun, night, fun, light (A B A B)

3Rhythm

Rhythm is the pattern of strong and soft beats. Line length and repeated words help to make it. Tap the beat as you read.

Example

Jump, jump, jump to the beat.

4Imagery

Imagery is language that creates pictures in your mind. It appeals to the senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste.

Example

Cold wind, smelling of rain, sighed through the gum trees.

5Sound devices

  • Alliteration: repeated first sounds
  • Onomatopoeia: a word that sounds like its meaning
  • Repetition: repeated words or lines
Example

Sizzling sausages; buzz, hiss, thud

6Figures of speech and mood

  • Simile: like or as
  • Metaphor: one thing is another
  • Personification: human actions for a thing
  • Mood: the feeling a poem creates
Example

The road was a ribbon of silver.
