A one-page CAPS Grade 7 Maths poster on algebraic expressions (Patterns and algebra), with the key ideas, key words and a tip to remember.
A variable is a letter that stands for a number. A constant is a number on its own. Terms are separated by + and −.
In 4y + 9:
variable y, constant 9, 2 terms
The number 4 is multiplied by y.
6 more than x: x + 6
2 less than p: p − 2
twice a number m: 2m
Replace the letter with its value. Then work out the answer in the right order.
5a − 3 when a = 7:
5 × 7 − 3 = 35 − 3 = 32
x² + 1 when x = 6:
6² + 1 = 36 + 1 = 37
Like terms have the same letter. Add or subtract their numbers. Unlike terms cannot be joined.
8m + 2m = 10m
9k − 5k = 4k
7p + 2q stays 7p + 2q
Choose a letter for the unknown number. Then use the story to build the expression.
A notebook costs R12.
n notebooks cost 12n rand.
7 notebooks: 12 × 7 = R84
