Ratio and rate

1What is a ratio?

A ratio compares quantities of the same kind. The order matters.

Example

7 apples and 4 pears:
apples : pears = 7 : 4
pears : apples = 4 : 7

2Simplest form and equivalent ratios

Multiply or divide both numbers by the same number. Use the same units first.

Example

30 : 45 = 10 : 15 = 2 : 3
50 cm : 2 m = 50 cm : 200 cm = 1 : 4

3Sharing in a ratio

  • Add the parts to find the total number of parts.
  • Divide the amount by the number of parts.
  • Multiply by each share of the ratio.
Example

Share R300 in the ratio 1 : 4.
1 + 4 = 5 parts
300 ÷ 5 = R60 for each part
R60 and 4 × 60 = R240

4Rate and speed

A rate compares different kinds of quantities, with units: km/h, R/kg.

  • speed = distance ÷ time
  • distance = speed × time
  • time = distance ÷ speed
Example

180 km in 2 hours
180 ÷ 2 = 90 km/h

5Unit method and best buy

Find the cost of one unit, then work out the amount you need.

Example

3 kg cost R45, so 1 kg costs R15.
1 kg for R24 or 3 kg for R66?
66 ÷ 3 = R22 per kg, so 3 kg is the better buy.
