A one-page CAPS Grade 7 Maths poster on exponents: squares, cubes and roots (Numbers), with the key ideas, key words and a tip to remember.
An exponent shows how many times the base is multiplied by itself.
5⁴ = 5 × 5 × 5 × 5 = 625
base 5, exponent 4
A root undoes a power. √ is the square root and ∛ is the cube root.
√121 = 11 because 11² = 121
∛1 000 = 10 because 10³ = 1 000
Write a number as a product of primes. Use an exponent for a prime that repeats.
180 = 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 × 5
180 = 2² × 3² × 5
3 + 2 × 4² = 3 + 2 × 16
= 3 + 32 = 35
Side 9 cm: area = 9² = 81 cm²
Edge 4 cm: volume = 4³ = 64 cm³
