Common fractions

1Equivalent fractions

Multiply or divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number.

Example

23 = 46 (× 2)
1824 = 34 (÷ 6)

2Comparing fractions

Change to a common denominator, then compare the numerators.

Example

35 and 710
610 < 710, so 35 < 710

3Adding and subtracting

Find a common denominator first. Then add or subtract the numerators only.

Example

12 + 25 = 510 + 410 = 910
78 − 13 = 2124 − 824 = 1324

4Mixed numbers

Add or subtract the whole numbers and the fractions. Regroup if needed. Change to improper fractions to multiply.

Example

1 13 + 2 12 = 1 26 + 2 36 = 3 56
2 34 = 114

5Multiplying fractions

  • Multiply the numerators. Multiply the denominators. Simplify.
  • Fraction of a whole number: divide by the denominator, then multiply by the numerator.
Example

34 × 29 = 636 = 16
25 of 30 = 30 ÷ 5 × 2 = 12

6Fractions, decimals and percentages

A fraction, a decimal and a percentage can name the same amount.

Example

12 = 0,5 = 50%
710 = 0,7 = 70%
