Data handling: mean, median, mode and range

1Mean

Add all the values. Then divide by the number of values.

Example

Data: 7, 3, 10, 4, 6
7 + 3 + 10 + 4 + 6 = 30
30 ÷ 5 = 6, so the mean is 6

2Median

Put the data in order from smallest to biggest. The median is the middle value. With two middle values, find the number halfway between them.

Example

3, 9, 5, 7, 11 in order: 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
The median is 7.
3, 7, 13, 9 in order: 3, 7, 9, 13
(7 + 9) ÷ 2 = 8, so the median is 8

3Mode and range

  • The mode is the value that appears most often.
  • A set of data can have two modes or no mode.
  • The range is the biggest value minus the smallest value.
  • The median is a good average when a few values are very big or very small.
Example

31, 18, 25, 40, 22, 25
Mode: 25
Range: 40 − 18 = 22

4Reading a bar graph

The height of each bar shows how many. The tallest bar is the mode.
