Geometry of straight lines and angles

1Parallel and perpendicular lines

Parallel lines are always the same distance apart and never meet. Perpendicular lines meet at a right angle.

2Types of angles

  • Acute: less than 90°. Right: exactly 90°.
  • Obtuse: between 90° and 180°.
  • Straight: exactly 180°.
  • Reflex: between 180° and 360°. A revolution: 360°.
120°

3Angles on a line and around a point

  • Angles on a straight line add up to 180°.
  • Angles around a point add up to 360°.
Example

a + 115° = 180°
a = 180° − 115° = 65°
90° + 130° + b = 360°
b = 360° − 220° = 140°

4Vertically opposite angles

When two straight lines cross, the angles opposite each other are equal.

Example

One angle is 40°.
The opposite angle is 40°.
The other two angles: 180° − 40° = 140°

5Complementary and supplementary

  • Complementary angles add up to 90°.
  • Supplementary angles add up to 180°.
Example

28° and 62° are complementary.
28° and 152° are supplementary.
