Numeric and geometric patterns

1Number patterns

The numbers in a pattern are called terms. A rule tells you how to get from one term to the next.

Example

5, 9, 13, 17, ... (add 4)
5, 10, 20, 40, ... (multiply by 2)

2Finding the rule

  • Work out the difference between the terms.
  • A constant difference means add or subtract.
  • A constant multiplier means multiply.
Example

50, 44, 38, 32, ...
The rule is subtract 6.
Next terms: 26 and 20

3Geometric patterns

Count the objects in each figure. Then look for the pattern in the numbers.

Example

Figures: 3, 5, 7 squares
Add 2 each time, so Figure 4 has 9.

4Rules with term numbers

A rule can use the term number n. The rule gives any term without listing all the terms before it.

Example

Rule: term = 5 × n + 1
n = 4: 5 × 4 + 1 = 21
n = 10: 5 × 10 + 1 = 51

5Special patterns

  • Square numbers: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36
  • Triangular numbers: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21
  • Some patterns grow by a changing amount.
Example

1, 2, 4, 7, 11, ...
Add 1, then 2, then 3, then 4
