Percentages

1Per cent means out of 100

A percentage is a fraction with a denominator of 100.

Example

37 out of 100 = 37100 = 37%

2Fractions, decimals and percentages

  • 50% = 12 = 0,5
  • 25% = 14 = 0,25
  • 10% = 110 = 0,1
  • 1% = 1100 = 0,01
Example

720 = 35100 = 35%
0,48 = 48%

3Percentage of an amount

Find 10% by dividing by 10. Then build up to the percentage you need.

Example

10% of 520 = 52
5% of 520 = 26
15% of 520 = 52 + 26 = 78

4One amount as a percentage of another

Write it as a fraction. Then change to a denominator of 100.

Example

14 out of 35 = 1435 = 25
25 = 40100 = 40%

5Increase and decrease

Find the percentage of the amount. Add it for an increase. Subtract it for a decrease.

Example

Increase R240 by 5%:
5% of 240 = 12, so R240 + R12 = R252
Decrease R90 by 10%:
10% of 90 = 9, so R90 − R9 = R81

6Comparing

Change everything to the same form, such as percentages, before you compare.
