Transformation geometry

1Translation

Every point slides the same distance in the same direction. The shape does not turn or flip.

Example

A shape slides 4 right and 2 up.
The point (1; 1) moves to (1 + 4; 1 + 2) = (5; 3)

2Reflection

The shape is flipped over a mirror line. Each point and its image are the same distance from the line.

Example

The point (2; 3) in the line x = 5
Distance to the line: 5 − 2 = 3
Image: (5 + 3; 3) = (8; 3)

3Rotation

The shape turns about a fixed point, the centre of rotation. Say the angle and the direction.

  • A quarter turn is 90°.
  • A half turn is 180°.
  • Clockwise is the way the clock hands move.
Example

An arrow points up.
Turn 90° clockwise: it points right.
Turn 180°: it points down.

4Enlargement and reduction

Every length is multiplied by the scale factor. The angles stay the same.

  • Scale factor more than 1: bigger.
  • Scale factor less than 1: smaller.
Example

A side is 8 cm. Scale factor 5.
8 × 5 = 40 cm

5Congruent and similar

  • Congruent: the same size and shape.
  • Translation, reflection and rotation give congruent shapes.
  • Similar: the same shape, a different size.
  • Enlargement and reduction give similar shapes.
