3D objects and symmetry

13D objects

A 3D object is solid. You can hold it. Its flat or curved surfaces are called faces.

Example

A cube has faces that are all squares.
A rectangular prism has rectangle faces.

2Faces, edges and vertices

  • An edge is where two faces meet. A vertex is a corner.
  • Cube and rectangular prism: 6 faces, 12 edges, 8 vertices
  • Square-based pyramid: 5 faces, 8 edges, 5 vertices
  • Triangular prism: 5 faces, 9 edges, 6 vertices

3Curved surfaces

  • A sphere has 1 curved surface and no flat faces.
  • A cylinder has 2 flat circles and 1 curved surface.

4Everyday objects

Look for 3D objects around you.

Example

A marble is a sphere.
A cooldrink can is a cylinder.
A tissue box is a rectangular prism.

5Line of symmetry

A line of symmetry cuts a shape into two halves that match, like a mirror. The shape folds exactly onto itself.

Example

This triangle has 1 line of symmetry.

6How many lines?

  • Square: 4 lines
  • Rectangle that is not a square: 2 lines
  • Triangle with 2 equal sides: 1 line
  • Circle: lots of lines

Key words

face
a flat or curved surface of a 3D object
edge
where two faces meet
vertex
a corner of a 3D object (more than one are vertices)
prism
an object with 2 matching ends and flat sides
pyramid
an object with a base and triangle faces that meet at a point
line of symmetry
a line that cuts a shape into two matching halves
