Division with remainders

1Division undoes multiplication

Division is the opposite of multiplication. Use your times tables to divide.

Example

7 × 9 = 63, so 63 ÷ 9 = 7 and 63 ÷ 7 = 9

2Sharing and grouping

Share 24 among 6: each gets 4. Or ask how many groups of 6 are in 24: there are 4 groups.

Example

24 ÷ 6 = 4

3Remainders

  • If a division does not come out exactly, the amount left over is the remainder.
  • The remainder is always smaller than the number you divide by.
Example

47 ÷ 6 = 7 remainder 5
7 × 6 = 42 and 42 + 5 = 47

4Break the number up

Split the number into parts that are easy to divide. Then add the answers.

Example

128 ÷ 4
120 ÷ 4 = 30 and 8 ÷ 4 = 2
So 128 ÷ 4 = 32

53-digit numbers

Take away easy groups of the divisor. Add up the groups.

Example

475 ÷ 3
3 × 100 = 300, 475 − 300 = 175
3 × 50 = 150, 175 − 150 = 25
3 × 8 = 24, 25 − 24 = 1
100 + 50 + 8 = 158 remainder 1

6Remainders in problems

  • Round down when the left-over part cannot be used.
  • Round up when you need one more.
Example

45 apples in bags of 7: 6 full bags, 3 left over.
45 people in cars of 7: 7 cars are needed.
