1What is a fraction?

A fraction is part of a whole. The whole is cut into equal parts.

Example

14 of the circle is shaded.

2Numerator and denominator

  • The denominator (bottom) is the number of equal parts.
  • The numerator (top) is the number of parts you have.
Example

34: 4 equal parts, 3 are shaded.

3Equivalent fractions

Different fractions can show the same amount. Multiply or divide the top and the bottom by the same number.

Example

12 = 24 = 48

4Comparing fractions

  • More equal parts means each part is smaller.
  • Same denominator? The bigger numerator is the bigger fraction.
Example

18 < 14 < 12
58 is bigger than 38.

5Adding and subtracting

Same denominators: add or subtract the numerators. The denominator stays the same.

Example

28 + 38 = 58
78 − 48 = 38

6A fraction of a number

Divide by the denominator, then multiply by the numerator.

Example

34 of 20: 20 ÷ 4 = 5, then 5 × 3 = 15
