A one-page CAPS Grade 4 Maths poster on adding and subtracting (Calculations), with the key ideas, key words and a tip to remember.
Write the numbers in columns, ones under ones. Add from the right. Carry when a column makes 10 or more.
3 674 + 2 859
Ones: 4 + 9 = 13 (write 3, carry 1)
Tens: 7 + 5 + 1 = 13 (write 3, carry 1)
Hundreds: 6 + 8 + 1 = 15 (write 5, carry 1)
Thousands: 3 + 2 + 1 = 6
Answer: 6 533
Subtract from the right. If the top digit is too small, exchange 1 from the next place. Across a zero, exchange from the next digit that is not zero.
7 402 − 2 685 = 4 717
Addition and subtraction undo each other. Add to check a subtraction. Subtract to check an addition.
4 717 + 2 685 = 7 402, so 7 402 − 2 685 = 4 717 is right.
Round each number, then calculate. The estimate shows whether your answer makes sense.
3 674 + 2 859 is about 4 000 + 3 000 = 7 000
18 + 27 = 27 + 18
(35 + 65) + 12 = 35 + (65 + 12)
90 + 0 = 90
Add for total, altogether and sum. Subtract for how many more, difference and left. Write a number sentence.
R2 640 on Friday and R1 380 on Saturday:
2 640 + 1 380 = R4 020
