Time

1Reading an analogue clock

The short hand shows the hour. The long hand shows the minutes. Count in 5s round the clock face.

123456789101112
Example

The long hand points to the 8, so it is 40 minutes past 2. We say twenty to 3.

2Telling the time in words

  • o’clock: the long hand is on the 12.
  • quarter past: 15 minutes past. Half past: 30 minutes past.
  • quarter to: 15 minutes before the next hour.
Example

5:45 is quarter to 6.
5:10 is ten past 5.

312-hour and 24-hour time

The 24-hour clock goes from 00:00 to 24:00. Noon is 12:00. Always write 4 digits. For pm times from 1:00 pm, add 12 hours.

Example

am stays the same: 8:05 am is 08:05
pm add 12: 5:20 pm is 17:20

4Units of time

  • 60 seconds = 1 minute
  • 60 minutes = 1 hour
  • 24 hours = 1 day
  • 7 days = 1 week, 12 months = 1 year

5How long does it take?

Count on to the next hour, then count on the rest.

Example

08:20 to 10:05
08:20 to 09:00 is 40 minutes
09:00 to 10:00 is 1 hour
10:00 to 10:05 is 5 minutes
Total: 1 hour 45 minutes

6Calendars

  • 30 days: April, June, September, November.
  • 31 days: the other months, except February.
  • February has 28 days (29 in a leap year).
Example

If 4 May is a Tuesday, then 11 May and 18 May are Tuesdays too.
