Number sentences and number patterns

1Number patterns

A pattern follows a rule. Look at the gap between the numbers to find the rule.

Example

3, 9, 15, 21, 27: add 6 each time
50, 44, 38, 32: subtract 6 each time

2Rules and tables

A rule changes the input into the output. Do the same to every input.

Example

Rule: multiply by 4
Input 5 gives output 20.
Input 9 gives output 36.

3Growing patterns

Sometimes the gaps change. Find the gaps first, then carry on.

Example

1, 3, 6, 10: the gaps are 2, 3, 4, so the next gap is 5.
The next number is 15.

4Missing numbers

  • A ? or a box stands for the missing number.
  • Use the inverse operation to find it.
Example

? + 26 = 70, so ? = 70 − 26 = 44
6 × ? = 54, so ? = 54 ÷ 6 = 9

5Trial and improvement

Guess, test, then improve your guess. Check by putting your answer back in.

Example

(? × 4) + 2 = 30
Try 6: (6 × 4) + 2 = 26, too small.
Try 7: (7 × 4) + 2 = 30, so ? = 7

6Shape patterns

Count the pieces in each picture. Look for what is added each time.

Example

Pattern 1 has 5 dots, Pattern 2 has 9 dots and Pattern 3 has 13 dots. Each pattern adds 4 dots.
