Data handling

1Collecting data

Data is information we collect. A tally chart records each answer with a stroke. Every fifth stroke crosses the four before it.

2Frequency table

A frequency table shows how many times each answer happens. Add the frequencies to find the total.

Example

Bus 9, walk 12, car 4
9 + 12 + 4 = 25 learners

3Bar graph

  • The title says what the graph is about.
  • Read across from the top of a bar to the scale.
  • 10 − 6 = 4: 4 more learners have dogs than cats.

4Pictograph

A pictograph uses a symbol for a number of things. Read the key first. Half a symbol is half of that number.

CatsDogs= 4 petsKey
Example

Cats: 3 symbols = 12 pets
Dogs: 1 and a half symbols = 6 pets

5Mode

The mode is the number or item that appears most often.

Example

Marks: 6, 8, 7, 8, 9, 8
The mode is 8. It appears 3 times.

6Comparing data

To compare two sets of data, add each set to find its total. Subtract to find how many more.

Example

Team X: 3 + 4 + 2 = 9 goals
Team Y: 2 + 2 + 3 = 7 goals, so X has 2 more.
