Length, mass and capacity

1Length

  • We measure length in mm, cm, m and km.
  • 10 mm = 1 cm
  • 100 cm = 1 m
  • 1 000 m = 1 km
Example

Thickness of a coin: mm
Length of a book: cm
Length of a room: m
Distance between towns: km

2Mass

  • We measure mass in grams (g) and kilograms (kg).
  • 1 000 g = 1 kg
Example

A loaf of bread: about 700 g
A bag of mielie meal: about 10 kg

3Capacity

  • We measure capacity in millilitres (ml) and litres (l).
  • 1 000 ml = 1 l
Example

A teaspoon: about 5 ml
A cup: about 250 ml
A bucket: about 10 l

4Changing units

To change to a smaller unit, multiply. To change to a bigger unit, divide.

Example

5 km = 5 × 1 000 = 5 000 m
6 000 ml = 6 000 ÷ 1 000 = 6 l
2 750 g = 2 kg 750 g

5Reading a scale

Count the spaces between two numbers. Work out what each small mark is worth.

0510
Example

From 0 to 5 there are 5 spaces, so each space is 1 cm. The dot is at 7 cm.

6Measuring problems

Change all the measures to the same unit before you add or subtract.

Example

1 m 50 cm + 80 cm
= 150 cm + 80 cm = 230 cm
