Perimeter and area

1Perimeter

The distance all the way round a shape. Add up the lengths of all the sides.

7 cm4 cm
Example

7 + 4 + 7 + 4 = 22 cm

2Measuring perimeter

  • Use a ruler for straight sides.
  • For a curved edge, lay string round the shape. Then measure the string with a ruler.

3Area

The space inside a shape. Count the squares. Each square is 1 square unit.

Example

There are 11 squares, so the area is 11 square units.

4Area of a rectangle

Count the rows, then count the squares in one row. Multiply.

Example

5 rows of 6 squares
5 × 6 = 30 square units

5Perimeter or area?

  • Perimeter is the edge: a fence, a frame, a border. Add the sides.
  • Area is the inside: tiles, paint, carpet. Count squares or multiply.

6Same area, different perimeter

Two shapes can cover the same area but have different perimeters.

Example

1 by 6 and 2 by 3 both have an area of 6.
Their perimeters are 14 and 10.
