1Grid references

On a map grid the letters run along the bottom and the numbers run up the side. A grid reference is the letter first, then the number.

ABCDE1234pondhuttree
Example

The pond is in square D1.

2Finding a square

  • Go along to the letter. That is the column.
  • Then go up to the number. That is the row.
  • Every square has its own reference.
Example

Column C and row 2 is square C2.

3Giving directions

Use right, left, up, down, forward and back. Say how many squares to move.

Example

Start at the pond in D1. Move 1 square right and 3 squares up.
You stop at the tree in E4.

4Quarter turns

A quarter turn is a turn like the corner of a page. Two quarter turns make a half turn. Four quarter turns make a full turn.

Example

A half turn: you face the opposite way.

5Opposites

  • left and right
  • up and down
  • forward and backward
Example

3 squares up, then 3 squares down:
you are back where you started.

6Following a route

Follow the directions one step at a time. Write down the square after each move.

Example

Start in A1.
2 right: C1
3 up: C4
1 left: B4
