2D shapes and angles

1Polygons

A polygon is a closed shape with straight sides. Name it by its number of sides.

Example

triangle 3, quadrilateral 4, pentagon 5,
hexagon 6, octagon 8 sides

2Regular shapes

A regular shape has equal sides and equal angles. Perimeter = number of sides × one side.

Example

Octagon, sides 5 cm: 8 × 5 = 40 cm
Hexagon, perimeter 48 cm:
48 ÷ 6 = 8 cm for each side

3Angles

  • A right angle is a square corner.
  • Smaller than a right angle: less open.
  • Greater than a right angle: more open.

4Triangles

  • Equilateral: 3 equal sides.
  • Isosceles: 2 equal sides.
  • Right-angled: 1 right angle.
Example

The ticks show sides of equal length.

5Quadrilaterals

  • Square: 4 equal sides, 4 right angles.
  • Rectangle: opposite sides equal, 4 right angles.
  • Rhombus: 4 equal sides. With no right angles it looks like a diamond.
  • Parallelogram: opposite sides parallel.

6Compare shapes

Check three things: the number of sides, the lengths of the sides and the angles.

Example

A square is a special rectangle.
