Adding and subtracting

1Column addition

  • Line up the digits: units under units, tens under tens.
  • Start at the units. Carry when a column makes 10 or more.
Example

34 567 + 28 945 = 63 512

2Column subtraction

  • Start at the units. If the top digit is too small, borrow 1 from the next place.
  • With zeros, borrow across them.
Example

75 204 − 38 689 = 36 515
80 003 − 46 758 = 33 245

3Estimate first

Round each number to the nearest 1 000 (or 100). Then calculate. Your exact answer should be close to the estimate.

Example

18 640 + 23 275 is about 19 000 + 23 000 = 42 000. Exact: 41 915.

4Check with the inverse

Adding and subtracting undo each other. Use one to check the other.

Example

5 000 − 1 200 = 3 800
Check: 3 800 + 1 200 = 5 000

5Smart adding

  • The order does not matter when you add: 27 + 48 = 48 + 27.
  • Group numbers that make 10, 100 or 1 000 first.
Example

25 + 38 + 75 = (25 + 75) + 38 = 138

6Word problems

  • Altogether, total, sum: add.
  • How many left, how much more, difference: subtract.
Example

R12 450 + R8 375 = R20 825

Key words

sum
the answer to an addition
difference
the answer to a subtraction
total

estimate
a close answer found by rounding
