Division with remainders

1Division and multiplication

Division undoes multiplication. Use your times tables to divide.

Example

7 × 8 = 56, so 56 ÷ 7 = 8 and 56 ÷ 8 = 7

2Divide by 10 and 100

  • Every digit moves 1 or 2 places to the right.
  • The number gets smaller.
Example

4 500 ÷ 10 = 450
4 500 ÷ 100 = 45

3Long division

  • Take away chunks of the divisor that fit.
  • Add up the chunks to get the answer.
Example

756 ÷ 18: 18 × 40 = 720
756 − 720 = 36 and 18 × 2 = 36
So 756 ÷ 18 = 42

4Remainders

  • What is left over is the remainder.
  • The remainder is always smaller than the divisor.
Example

29 ÷ 4 = 7 R1, because 4 × 7 = 28 and 29 − 28 = 1

5Check your answer

Multiply the answer by the divisor. Then add the remainder. You must get the number you started with.

Example

593 ÷ 14 = 42 R5
Check: 14 × 42 = 588 and 588 + 5 = 593

6Word problems

Think about what the remainder means. Sometimes you must round the answer up.

Example

100 learners, 15 in each taxi: 100 ÷ 15 = 6 R10, so 7 taxis are needed

Key words
