Multiplication

1Times tables and arrays

  • Know your tables up to 12 × 12.
  • The order does not matter: 3 × 5 = 5 × 3.
Example

3 rows of 5 dots: 3 × 5 = 15

2Multiply by 10, 100 and 1 000

  • Every digit moves 1, 2 or 3 places to the left.
  • Fill the empty places with zeros.
Example

35 × 10 = 350
35 × 100 = 3 500
35 × 1 000 = 35 000

3Multiples of 10 and 100

Multiply the digits that are not zero. Then write all the zeros after the answer.

Example

40 × 60: 4 × 6 = 24, then 2 zeros, so 2 400

4Break up the number

Split one number into tens and ones. Multiply each part, then add.

Example

6 × 47 = (6 × 40) + (6 × 7) = 240 + 42 = 282

5Long multiplication

  • Multiply by the units first.
  • Multiply by the tens. Write a 0 in the units place first.
  • Add the two answers.
Example

423 × 35: 423 × 5 = 2 115
423 × 30 = 12 690
2 115 + 12 690 = 14 805

6Estimate first

Round both numbers, multiply, then check that your answer is close.

Example

396 × 22 is about 400 × 20 = 8 000

Key words

product
the answer to a multiplication
factor
a number that is multiplied
commutative
