Common fractions

1Naming fractions

The denominator is the number of equal parts in the whole. The numerator is the number of parts you have.

Example

912 of the bar is shaded.

2Equivalent fractions

Multiply or divide the top and the bottom by the same number. The amount stays the same.

Example

12 = 24 = 36 = 48 = 510 = 612
912 = 34 (divide by 3)

3Comparing fractions

  • Same denominator: the bigger numerator is bigger.
  • Same numerator: the smaller denominator is bigger.
  • Different denominators: make them the same.
Example

34 and 58: 34 = 68, and 68 is bigger than 58, so 34 > 58.

4Ordering fractions

Write them as equivalent fractions with the same denominator. Then order the numerators.

01/31/22/35/61
Example

In sixths: 26, 36, 46, 56
So the order is 13, 12, 23, 56.

5A fraction of a number

Divide by the denominator. Then multiply by the numerator.

Example

34 of 36: 36 ÷ 4 = 9, then 9 × 3 = 27

6Fractions and division

A fraction is a division. The top number is divided by the bottom number.

Example

3 ÷ 4 = 34
3 pizzas shared by 4 learners: 34 of a pizza each
