Example

In 472 506 the 7 is in the ten thousands place. Its value is 70 000.

2Number names

  • Group the digits in threes with a space.
  • Say the thousands first, then the hundreds, tens and units.

3Expanded form

Write a number as the sum of the values of its digits.

Example

342 568 = 300 000 + 40 000 + 2 000 + 500 + 60 + 8

4Comparing and ordering

  • More digits means a bigger number.
  • Same number of digits? Compare from the left.
Example

98 540 < 99 045 < 104 058

5Rounding off

  • Look at the digit to the right of the place you round to.
  • 5 or more: round up. 4 or less: stay the same.
  • Nearest 5: pick the closer multiple of 5.
4 6004 6504 700
Example

4 628 to the nearest 10 is 4 630. To the nearest 100 it is 4 600. To the nearest 1 000 it is 5 000.

6Counting on and back

Add or subtract 10, 100, 1 000 or 10 000. Watch the zeros.

Example

237 658 + 10 000 = 247 658
300 000 − 1 000 = 299 000
