Factors and multiples

1What is a factor?

A factor divides exactly into a number, with no remainder. Factors come in pairs that multiply to give the number.

Example

12 = 3 × 4, so 3 and 4 are factors of 12.

2Listing all the factors

  • Test 1, 2, 3, 4 ... in order.
  • Write each pair. Stop when the factors meet or repeat.
Example

24 = 1 × 24 = 2 × 12 = 3 × 8 = 4 × 6
Factors of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24

3What is a multiple?

Multiples are the answers in a times table. They go on for ever.

Example

Multiples of 7: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 ...

4Factor or multiple?

  • 24 is a multiple of 6 because 6 × 4 = 24.
  • 6 is a factor of 24 because 24 ÷ 6 = 4 with no remainder.
Example

Is 45 a multiple of 7? 7 × 6 = 42 and 7 × 7 = 49, so no.

5Useful facts

  • 1 is a factor of every number.
  • A number is a factor and a multiple of itself.
  • Multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5.
Example

Multiples of 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 ...

6Using them

  • Equal groups with none left over: use a factor.
  • A common factor is a factor of two numbers.
Example

12 is a factor of 24 and of 36.
