Adding and subtracting fractions

1Same denominators

Add or subtract the numerators. The denominator stays the same.

Example

37 + 27 = 57
79 − 59 = 29

2Mixed numbers

A mixed number is a whole number and a fraction.

0123
Example

The dot shows 2 14: 2 wholes and 14.

3Improper fractions

The numerator is bigger than the denominator. Divide to find the wholes.

Example

74: 7 ÷ 4 = 1 remainder 3
74 = 1 34

4Adding mixed numbers

  • Add the wholes. Add the fractions.
  • If the fraction is 1 or more, make another whole.
Example

2 38 + 1 78 = 3 108 = 4 28

5Subtracting mixed numbers

  • Subtract the wholes. Subtract the fractions.
  • Fraction too small? Break 1 whole into parts.
Example

5 69 − 2 49 = 3 29
4 16 − 1 56 = 3 76 − 1 56 = 2 26

6Word problems

  • Find the whole that is shared.
  • Check that your answer makes sense.
Example

38 of a bottle + 28 of a bottle = 58 of a bottle
