1Faces, edges and vertices

  • Face: a flat or curved surface.
  • Edge: where two faces meet.
  • Vertex: a corner. Two or more corners are vertices.
Example

A cube (a dice) has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices.
A cereal box is a rectangular prism.

2Prisms

A prism has two identical faces joined by rectangles.

Example

Triangular prism: 2 triangles and 3 rectangles

3Pyramids

A pyramid has a base. The other faces are triangles that meet at one point.

Example

Square pyramid: 1 square and 4 triangles

4Solids with curved surfaces

  • Cylinder (a tin): 2 flat circles, 1 curved surface.
  • Cone (an ice-cream cone): 1 flat circle, 1 curved surface.
  • Sphere (a ball): 1 curved surface only.

5Counting faces, edges, vertices

  • Cube, rectangular prism: 6, 12, 8
  • Triangular prism: 5, 9, 6
  • Square pyramid: 5, 8, 5
  • Triangular pyramid: 4, 6, 4
Example

Order: faces, edges, vertices

6Nets

A net is a flat pattern that folds up to make a solid.

Example

This net has 6 squares. It folds to make a cube.
