Length, mass and capacity

1Length

  • Units: mm, cm, m and km.
  • 10 mm = 1 cm
  • 100 cm = 1 m
  • 1 000 m = 1 km
Example

3 m = 3 × 100 = 300 cm

2Mass

  • Units: g and kg.
  • 1 000 g = 1 kg
Example

2 kg = 2 × 1 000 = 2 000 g
6 000 g = 6 000 ÷ 1 000 = 6 kg

3Capacity

  • Units: ml and l.
  • 1 000 ml = 1 l
Example

7 l = 7 × 1 000 = 7 000 ml
4 000 ml = 4 000 ÷ 1 000 = 4 l

4Changing units

Big unit to small unit: multiply. Small unit to big unit: divide. Compare amounts in the same unit.

Example

5 km = 5 × 1 000 = 5 000 m
2 500 g is less than 3 kg, because 3 kg = 3 000 g

5Fractions of a unit

  • 12 km = 500 m
  • 14 kg = 250 g
  • 34 l = 750 ml
  • 1 12 l = 1 500 ml
Example

12 of 1 000 = 500
14 of 1 000 = 250

6Choose a sensible unit

  • A pencil is about 18 cm long.
  • A cup of tea is about 250 ml.
  • A bag of potatoes is about 5 kg.
  • A walk to school is about 2 km.
