Patterns and number sentences

1Number patterns

A pattern follows a rule. Look at the gap between each number to find the rule.

Example

3, 7, 11, 15, 19: add 4 each time

2Growing gaps

Sometimes the gap changes in a pattern of its own. Find the gaps first.

Example

1, 2, 4, 7, 11: the gaps are 1, 2, 3, 4
The next gap is 5, so the next number is 16.

3Rules and tables

A rule changes the input into the output. Do the same to every input.

Example

Rule: multiply by 4
Input 3 gives output 12. Input 9 gives output 36.

4Number sentences

  • Use a letter such as n for the missing number.
  • Use the inverse operation to find it.
Example

n + 38 = 100, so n = 100 − 38 = 62
6 × n = 72, so n = 72 ÷ 6 = 12

5Trial and improvement

Guess, test, then make a better guess. Check by putting your answer back in.

Example

(n × 6) + 4 = 58
Try 8: (8 × 6) + 4 = 52, too small
Try 9: (9 × 6) + 4 = 58, so n = 9

6Shape patterns

Count the pieces in each picture. Look for what is added each time.

Example

Squares in a row need 4, 7, 10, 13 matchsticks. Each new square adds 3.
