Perimeter and area

1Perimeter

Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape. Add the lengths of all the sides.

8 cm5 cm8 cm5 cm
Example

8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 cm

2Rectangles and squares

  • Rectangle: 2 lengths and 2 widths.
  • Square: 4 sides that are the same.
Example

10 m by 6 m: 2 × (10 + 6) = 2 × 16 = 32 m
Square with sides of 15 m: 4 × 15 = 60 m

3Irregular shapes

Write the length of every side. Then add all the sides.

10 cm3 cm7 cm6 cm3 cm9 cm
Example

10 + 3 + 7 + 6 + 3 + 9 = 38 cm

4Area

Area is the flat space inside a shape. Count the squares that cover the shape. Each square is 1 square unit.

Example

2 rows of 5 and 2 rows of 2
10 + 4 = 14 square units

5Area of a rectangle

Multiply the number of rows by the number of squares in each row.

Example

6 rows of 5 squares: 6 × 5 = 30 square units
Write square centimetres as cm²

6Perimeter or area?

  • Perimeter: a fence, a frame, a walk round the edge. Use cm, m or km.
