Position and symmetry

1Grid references

Write the letter first. Then write the number. Letters go across and numbers go up.

ABCDEF12345treehut
Example

The tree is in D4. The hut is in B2.

2Moving on a grid

  • Right or left changes the letter.
  • Up or down changes the number.
Example

A3, 3 squares right and 2 down: D1
E4, 2 squares left and 1 down: C3

3Lines of symmetry

A line of symmetry cuts a shape into two halves that match exactly when folded.

Example

A rectangle has 2 lines. A diagonal is not a line of symmetry.

4How many lines?

  • Isosceles triangle: 1. Kite: 1
  • Equilateral triangle: 3
  • Rectangle (not a square): 2
  • Square: 4
Example

The letters A and H have a vertical line of symmetry.

5Reflection

A reflection is a mirror image. Each point is the same distance from the mirror line, on the other side.

ABCDEF123
Example

The dot in A2 reflects to F2.

6Translation

A translation slides a shape to a new place. The shape does not turn or flip over.

ABCDEF123fromto
Example

3 right, 2 down: A3 moves to D1.

Key words
