Time

1Reading an analogue clock

The short hand shows the hour. The long hand shows the minutes. Count in 5s round the clock face.

Example

The long hand is on the 4: 4 × 5 = 20 minutes.
The time is 7:20, twenty minutes past 7.

2Past and to

  • The minute hand on the right side: minutes past the hour.
  • The minute hand on the left side: minutes to the next hour.
123456789101112
Example

4:15 is quarter past 4. 4:30 is half past 4.
4:45 is quarter to 5, or 15 minutes to 5.

312-hour and 24-hour time

In the afternoon, add 12 to the hour to write 24-hour time. 24-hour time has 4 digits.

Example

3:30 p.m. = 15:30
9:15 a.m. = 09:15
Midnight is 00:00 and noon is 12:00.

4Units of time

  • 60 seconds = 1 minute
  • 60 minutes = 1 hour
  • 24 hours = 1 day
  • 7 days = 1 week
Example

3 hours = 3 × 60 = 180 minutes
240 seconds = 240 ÷ 60 = 4 minutes

5Time that passes

Count on to the next hour first. Then add the rest.

Example

14:15 to 16:05
14:15 to 16:00 is 1 hour 45 minutes
Add 5 minutes: 1 hour 50 minutes

6Calendars and dates

  • 30 days: April, June, September, November
  • 31 days: all the other months
  • February: 28 days, or 29 in a leap year
Example

From 25 March to 4 April:
6 + 4 = 10 days
