A one-page CAPS Grade 6 Maths poster on 3D objects (Shapes and space), with the key ideas, key words and a tip to remember.
A face is a flat surface. An edge is where two faces meet. A vertex is a corner. The plural of vertex is vertices.
Cube and rectangular prism:
6 faces, 12 edges, 8 vertices
Cylinders, cones and spheres have curved surfaces. Count only the flat faces.
A cone has 1 flat face (a circle),
1 curved surface and 1 vertex.
A prism has two identical bases joined by rectangles. If the base has n sides: faces n + 2, edges 3 × n, vertices 2 × n.
Hexagonal prism, n = 6:
8 faces, 18 edges, 12 vertices
A pyramid has one base and triangular faces that meet at a point. If the base has n sides: faces n + 1, edges 2 × n, vertices n + 1.
Hexagonal pyramid, n = 6:
7 faces, 12 edges, 7 vertices
A net is a flat pattern that folds up into a 3D object. A cube needs 6 squares. A tetrahedron needs 4 triangles. A square pyramid needs 1 square and 4 triangles. A triangular prism needs 2 triangles and 3 rectangles.
