A one-page CAPS Grade 6 Maths poster on adding and subtracting whole numbers (Calculations), with the key ideas, key words and a tip to remember.
Line up the digits by place value. Add from the right and carry when a column makes 10 or more.
58 764 + 27 689
Ones: 4 + 9 = 13 (write 3, carry 1)
Tens: 6 + 8 + 1 = 15 (write 5, carry 1)
Hundreds: 7 + 6 + 1 = 14 (write 4, carry 1)
Thousands: 8 + 7 + 1 = 16 (write 6, carry 1)
Ten thousands: 5 + 2 + 1 = 8
Answer: 86 453
Start at the right. If the top digit is too small, exchange 1 from the next place. Across a zero, exchange from the next digit that is not zero.
40 306 − 18 457 = 21 849
Addition and subtraction undo each other. Add to check a subtraction. Subtract to check an addition.
21 849 + 18 457 = 40 306, so 40 306 − 18 457 = 21 849 is right.
Round each number, then calculate. The estimate shows whether your answer makes sense.
58 764 + 27 689 is about 60 000 + 30 000 = 90 000
18 + 27 = 27 + 18
(35 + 65) + 12 = 35 + (65 + 12)
90 + 0 = 90
Add for total, altogether and sum. Subtract for how many more, difference and left. Write a number sentence.
R42 750 in March and R38 295 in April:
42 750 + 38 295 = R81 045
