A one-page CAPS Grade 6 Maths poster on prime numbers, factors and multiples (Numbers), with the key ideas, key words and a tip to remember.
A factor divides a number exactly, with nothing left over. Factors come in pairs that multiply to give the number.
Factors of 45:
1 × 45, 3 × 15, 5 × 9
1, 3, 5, 9, 15, 45
Primes up to 20:
2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19
Try to divide by 2, 3, 5 and 7. If none of them divides exactly, the number is prime.
77: 77 ÷ 7 = 11, so 77 is composite.
89: not divisible by 2, 3, 5 or 7, so 89 is prime.
Split the number into two factors. Keep splitting until every factor is prime. Write them as a product.
90 = 9 × 10 = 3 × 3 × 2 × 5
90 = 2 × 3 × 3 × 5
Factors of 16: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16
Factors of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24
Common: 1, 2, 4, 8
Multiples of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15
Multiples of 5: 5, 10, 15
First common multiple: 15
