Division

1Division undoes multiplication

Use your times tables to find division facts. Check a division by multiplying.

Example

13 × 6 = 78, so 78 ÷ 6 = 13 and 78 ÷ 13 = 6

2Dividing by 10, 100 and 1 000

  • Each digit moves 1, 2 or 3 places to the right.
  • With multiples of 10, cancel the same number of zeros in both numbers.
Example

56 000 ÷ 100 = 560
3 600 ÷ 60 = 360 ÷ 6 = 60

3Long division by 2 digits

Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Repeat until there are no digits left.

Example

2 952 ÷ 24
29 ÷ 24 = 1, 29 − 24 = 5, bring down 5
55 ÷ 24 = 2, 55 − 48 = 7, bring down 2
72 ÷ 24 = 3, remainder 0
Answer: 123

4Dividing by 3 digits

Take away friendly multiples of the divisor (×10, ×20, ×5), then divide what is left.

Example

6 188 ÷ 238
20 × 238 = 4 760
6 188 − 4 760 = 1 428
6 × 238 = 1 428
20 + 6 = 26

5Remainders

  • Check: quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend.
  • Read the problem. For “how many are needed”, round up. For “how many full ...”, keep the quotient.
Example

1 000 ÷ 48 = 20 R40
48 × 20 + 40 = 1 000

6Division as a fraction

A division can be written as a fraction. The dividend is the numerator and the divisor is the denominator.

Example

2 ÷ 3 = 23
7 ÷ 4 = 74 = 1 34

Key words

dividend
the number that is divided
divisor
the number you divide by
quotient
the answer to a division
remainder
what is left over after dividing
inverse operation
an operation that undoes another one
