Order of operations

1The order of operations

  • 1. Brackets first.
  • 2. Then multiply and divide, from left to right.
  • 3. Then add and subtract, from left to right.
Example

9 + 4 × 2 = 9 + 8 = 17

2Brackets change the order

Work out what is inside the brackets first. Brackets can change the answer.

Example

(9 + 4) × 2 = 13 × 2 = 26
Without brackets: 9 + 4 × 2 = 17

3Left to right

Multiplication and division have the same rank. So have addition and subtraction. Work from left to right.

Example

48 ÷ 6 × 2 = 8 × 2 = 16
20 − 7 + 3 = 13 + 3 = 16

4Longer calculations

Underline the part you do first. Write the calculation again at every step.

Example

30 − 12 ÷ 3 + 5 × 2
= 30 − 4 + 10
= 26 + 10
= 36

5From words to number sentences

Write the steps in order. Use brackets when an addition or a subtraction must happen first.

Example

Add 6 and 9, then multiply by 4:
(6 + 9) × 4 = 15 × 4 = 60
