Multiplication

1Times tables and the zeros trick

  • Know your tables to 12 × 12.
  • × 10, × 100, × 1 000: each digit moves 1, 2 or 3 places left. Zeros fill the gaps.
  • For multiples of 10: multiply the other digits, then write all the zeros.
Example

63 × 100 = 6 300
208 × 1 000 = 208 000
60 × 700 = 42 000 (6 × 7 = 42, then 3 zeros)

2Long multiplication by 2 digits

Multiply by the ones, then by the tens. Add the two partial products.

Example

2 614 × 35
2 614 × 5 = 13 070
2 614 × 30 = 78 420
13 070 + 78 420 = 91 490

3Multiplying by 3 digits

Multiply by the ones, the tens and the hundreds. Add all three partial products.

Example

1 508 × 213
1 508 × 3 = 4 524
1 508 × 10 = 15 080
1 508 × 200 = 301 600
Total: 321 204

4Smart ways to multiply

  • Distributive property: break a number into parts.
  • Double one number and halve the other.
Example

7 × 98 = 7 × 100 − 7 × 2 = 700 − 14 = 686
16 × 25 = 8 × 50 = 400

5Estimate first

Round each number to its biggest place, then multiply. Check that your answer is close.

Example

489 × 21 is about 500 × 20 = 10 000

Key words

the answer to a multiplication
partial product
one part of a long multiplication
distributive property
a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c
estimate
